Ever walk by something and its symbolic meaning jumps out at you?

I was walking across campus today to go eat my lunch and I look over and I see some students “roping” off their picnic table with streamer paper to decorate for a little birthday party they were having.

Now I think the kids were just trying to create a birthday party atmosphere with their decorations and were not trying to separate themselves or keep other people out.

But when I saw it I thought how symbolic it was of cliques.  In fact it struck me so much that I walked back over pulled out my cell phone and snapped a picture.

members only?

According to the WikiDictionary:

A clique (pronounced /ˈkliːk/, in American English also /ˈklɪk/) is an exclusive group of people who share interests, views, purposes, patterns of behavior, or ethnicity.

On a side note, ever since I have been teaching at Santa Fe HS I’ve been perplexed by all the birthday celebrations.  Students bring homemade cakes, frosting and all, to school and then carrying them around with them from class to class to give to their friend.

I think it is weird.

All my years of K-12, college, etc.  I never saw anyone bring a cake to school.  I have some student asking me to keep their cake at my desk for them all the time!  I guess it doesn’t hurt anything but I still think it is weird.  Too bad we don’t take cake attendance.  I wish I knew our record for most cakes on campus on a single day.
